Honouring Indigenous Women's and Family's Pregnancy Journeys- Recorded Presentation
A presentation of PSBCs new Indigenous Perinatal Practice Resource by Lucy Barney, Statlimx Nation, RN, BSN, MSN
This resource supports improved perinatal care, created by aunties, mothers, grandmothers, sisters and daughters.
Date of Presentation: July 29, 2021
"The perinatal period—the period of pregnancy through labour and delivery and the early weeks after birth—is a sensitive time for all women and pregnant individuals. However, it is particularly challenging for Indigenous Peoples for whom discrimination, racism, dehumanizing interactions, and a loss of autonomy in the healthcare system are everyday experiences.(1)
This guide will raise awareness of these challenges and will assist healthcare providers to ensure clinical perinatal care is respectful and safe. Practice shifts must be undertaken at both the individual and organizational levels, in collaboration with Indigenous Peoples, recognizing and respecting their cultural needs, preferences and priorities." Prenatal Breastfeeding Classes (Virtual) - no further classes planned in the immediate future
A Personalized Start to Your Feeding Journey is a new approach to prenatal breastfeeding classes. BCLCA has designed a curriculum and format to support families in meeting their own goals. This on-line prenatal breastfeeding series, consisting of 3 sessions, is a place where pregnant parents will have a chance to explore values, wishes and questions related to feeding in a safe, small group setting, guided by two international board certified lactation consultants (IBCLCs). Next series is for parents in the Lower Mainland and starts April 11 at 3 p.m. The format is virtual and consists of 3 sessions, future sessions to be held in other regions across B.C.
The full series will cost just 15 $CAD and with registration each participant will get:
Parents are invited to have their support person attend.
Participants will need the ability to download Zoom on your device and have a stable internet connection.
Cancelling registration will generate a credit and is available up to one week before the first session.
